Teltone Adds IP Capabilities to its Gauntlet Secure
Communications Solution

September 5, 2007 (BOTHELL, Wash.) – Teltone Corporation, a leading provider of secure communications solutions for the power utility industry, today announced the next generation of its Gauntlet secure substation communications solution. In addition to Gauntlet’s secure dial-up capabilities, version 2.0 includes protection for Internet Protocol (IP) based communication architectures.

Utilities are increasingly driven by the need to protect their control systems and remote devices from cyber attack and conform to the NERC (North American Electric Reliability Council) CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection) Cyber Security regulations.

Teltone Gauntlet addresses the security concerns of utilities with a comprehensive suite of security features including:

  • Enables utilities to meet NERC CIP 002-009 requirements without changes to in-service equipment.
  • Secure dial-up, IP, and serial-over-IP access to remote cyber assets.
  • AutoAudit™ feature provides one-click report generation consolidating all documentation required by NERC CIP. Logs are gathered from all system components, and automatically uploaded to central repository.
  • Dial-up and IP Gateways meet or exceed standards for substation-hardened equipment (IEEE 37.90, etc.).
  • Centralized system administration of users and device settings.
  • Proven compatibility with existing substation hardware and software.
  • Robust, decentralized architecture for resilency.
  • Remote software upgrades keep systems up-to-date.

The Gauntlet system consists of four interrelated software and hardware components:

  • Server: centralized software for user and asset management
  • Client: software on user PC required for access to substation devices
  • Dial-up Gateway: secure line sharing switch
  • IP Gateway: based on RuggedCom RuggedRouter RX1100 router/firewall/VPN

“With the addition of IP capabilities, Teltone Gauntlet now addresses the secure communications requirements of virtually any utility company,” commented Debra Griffith, Teltone President and CEO. “Utilities can rest assured that they are investing in a proven, low-impact solution from two companies with reputations for longevity and rugged, reliable products. In addition, companies who have previously purchased Teltone Substation Line Sharing Switches (including long-time customers going back a decade or more) are able to leverage their investment with very economical, secure upgrades and rapid time-to-compliance.”
