Teltone Responds to Final Approval of NERC CIP Standards
- FERC unanimously approves NERC CIP cyber security standards
- Modifications requested providing for further tightening of standards
- Teltone Gauntlet supports ongoing standards development
January 18, 2008 (BOTHELL, Wash.) – Responding to yesterday’s final approval of the eight NERC CIP standards by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Teltone Corporation, a leading provider of enterprise communications solutions for the power utility industry, announced its ongoing support for the NERC CIP standards and commitment to evolve its Gauntlet cyber security solution in lockstep with standards development.
In addition to approving the standards in their current form, FERC has directed NERC to further tighten the standards to provide for external oversight of classification of critical cyber assets and removal of language allowing variable implementation of the standards. Moreover, NERC is directed to monitor the development of the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) cyber security standards for provisions that will better protect the bulk power system. In short, the NERC CIP standards are certain to evolve over time and utilities will need to respond quickly to the changing requirements.
“With the final approval of NERC CIP, utilities are under the gun to bring their critical substations into compliance by the June 2008 deadline,” commented Debra Griffith, Teltone CEO. “Our message to North American utilities is that we’re here to help you in this difficult implementation process. Teltone Gauntlet is the only 100% NERC CIP compatible solution for securing dial-up and IP substation communications. And with the recent introduction of Gauntlet EasyCIP, the process of NERC CIP compliance has been further simplified, enabling utilities of any size to comply with the NERC CIP standards.
As the process of enhancing the NERC CIP standards continues, and with the possible incorporation of other security standards, Teltone will exercise its commitment to support these developments in future product releases. With Teltone Gauntlet, utilities can be confident that they are deploying a security solution fully compliant with today’s standards, and providing ongoing support for any and all future regulatory imperatives.”
