Substation Monitoring
Substation monitoring allows cost effective
remote management of a utility substation facility and
related systems.
What is substation monitoring?
Substation monitoring allows remote
retrieval of key information from utility sites that are
not easily accessible, without having to actually visit
the site.
Why use substation monitoring equipment?
Travel to remote locations or expensive
communications infrastructure are not feasible solutions
for routine substation monitoring. In many cases, you
need to gather data at regular intervals, weekly, daily,
or even hourly to determine the health of the substation,
including monitoring:
- Alarms
- Meter reading
- Energy management devices
This information is easily collected
via computer communicating over standard telephone lines.
However, the cost of dedicated telephone lines for each
device can be prohibitive.
How can Teltone help?
Teltone is a veteran in supplying communications
solutions for the utilities market. Line Sharing Switches
allow you to access multiple telecom devices quickly and
easily from a remote computer terminal. This eliminates
the need for multiple dedicated phone lines, and simplifies
substation monitoring.
The system diagram below shows a basic
configuration using a Teltone Substation Line Sharing
Switch (at the remote location) and Polling Controller
(at the data collection computer).

Teltone offers four solutions for cost-effective
remote data collection.
| Gauntlet |
The Gauntlet substation security system provides secure remote access to critical cyber assets, with centralized system administration, comprehensive call logging, and Teltone's substation-hardened line sharing technology. |
| Polling
Controller |
The Polling Controller is an
optional device used to increase connection accuracy
and decrease dialing time when accessing any LSS or
SLSS product. |
| DS-100 |
The DS-100 electronic data switch
communicates with up to 8 devices through a single,
RS-232 serial connection to reduce the cost of multiple
modems. |
